Sara Tappan
Sara Tappan is a senior receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design. She served on the E-board of the International Interior Design Association, as the President of the College Panhellenic Council, and was part of the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority. Sara has worked all four years as an Interior Design Intern. She will remain at her current internship throughout the summer and will be resuming school in the fall. Sara will be continuing her education at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Fall 2020 to earn her Master's degree in Architecture.
Newark Culinary Institute, 32 Prince Street
For the INT434 Capstone project, our challenge was to take the shell of 32 Prince Street in Newark, New Jersey and create a Culinary Institute. I chose to atomize the learning experience through specialized kitchens including molecular gastronomy, wet heat, dry heat, veganism, bread, etc. on the first and third floor. The second floor is dedicated to professional practice where the students get to work in a variety of restaurants, along with a community outreach center. The central stair serves as a fundamental artery for movement, and eventually becomes part of the architecture through seating and shelving for the demo kitchen. A hydroponic garden rotates throughout all three floors, promoting locally grown, sustainable, and organic produce for the university and community.
