Ironbound Hinge
The fall 2017 Ironbound Hinge studio, asked designers to develop alternative proposals for a pivotal 2.5-acre site abutting a viaduct often referred to as Newark’s Highline. Each proposal needed to address entry to the viaduct, which led to a $100 million park then under construction. Coordinating closely with Newark stakeholders, student designs blended residential, commercial, recreational, and institutional programs to develop two final outcomes: one accepting the residential/institutional buildout allowed by current zoning, and a second assuming a redevelopment designation that allows a larger scale in return for on-site amenities.
