The winners of the Masonry Design/Build 2012 were announced on Monday, April 16 at the annual banquet. Every spring semester, second year architecture students are assigned a studio project to design a masonry building with a specific program. This year the project was designing a water taxi terminal in Bayonne, New Jersey. Ten teams with color code names produced their projects throughout the semester and built their designs with masonry journeymen last weekend. Also on Monday, April 16 the teams gave verbal and graphic presentations to the jury. This year’s jury consisted of James Boland (President, International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers), Alan Chimacoff, AIA (Principal, Ikon 5 Architects), Urs Gauchat (Dean, NJIT College of Architecture and Design), Peter Hamilton (Hunter Roberts Construction Group), Carlos Jimenez (Principal, Designer, Carlos Jimenez Studio), Gerard Scarano (Executive Vice President, International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers), and Maria Viteri, AIA, LEED AP (Director of Sustainability & Program Development, International Masonry Institute).
Taking into consideration the Architectural Idea, the Material Idea and the Fragment/Build Idea, as well as the ability to present and communicate a project well, the Jury awarded the following teams in the following categories:
First Place: Team Dark Green
Second Place: Team Gold
Third Place: Team Light Green
Third Place: Team Purple
Best Project Manager: Brittany Locke
Best Mock-Up: Team Blue
