My name is Mateo Aristizabal and I was born in Medellin, Colombia and moved to Stamford, Connecticut when I was 2 years old. My family and I moved to Jersey in 2011 and I’m proud to call it home. As a first-generation Latino college student graduating from NJIT with a bachelor’s degree in architecture I can honestly say that I haven’t done this alone. Above all things, I know that I wouldn’t be here if it were not for the grace of God and the support of my family and friends. Though this journey may be done, I know that there will be many challenges that are ahead. I plan on pursuing my Masters degree in Infrastructure Planning in the Fall of 2020 while continuing to chase my passion for health and fitness in order to provide my community with a more resilient environment.
Lincoln Park – The Connected Coast
Lincoln Park is a district in Newark, New Jersey, which is essentially one of the gateways into the city; a city that is growing exponentially. Even though this is an arts district, such a fact is not evident to residents and pedestrians due to the lack of entertainment in the area. The Lincoln Park District is home to Lincoln Park, one of Newark’s three main parks, and Newark Symphony Hall, a cornerstone for Newark’s art and culture during the 50’s and 60’s. We intended to create a community for equitable sustainable living by improving the livelihood of the residents with increased social services, increased feeling of safety and better food options. By creating connections at different scales, we create various networks of interaction where residents and visitors of all ages interact; such interaction informs program and program placement.
