Monday, September 19th 5:00 p.m. in Weston Alumni Hall
Speaker: Gabe Guilliams, Buro Happold
Presentation Title: Lighting Design for Cultural Projects
Abstract:
This presentation will review three projects, their specific design drivers, the way they work with different building systems, and the opportunities and challenges faced in their design and construction.
Speaker Bio:
Gabe Guilliams is a partner, the global lighting design leader for Buro Happold, and the US Culture Sector leader. Prior to and through his college career Gabe worked in construction, which has influenced his sense of practicality in approach to his work. His interest in the science of light, appreciation of advanced material modeling and iterative parametric modeling have fueled his team’s exploration in highly technical project challenges resulting in the successful delivery of some of the world’s most iconic cultural landmarks. He has led the successful integrated lighting design for many award-winning and iconic projects, including: The Louvre Abu Dhabi, Musee National des Beaux Arts du Quebec, Grace Farms in New Canaan, CT; The Academy Museum in Los Angeles, and LACMA’s Building for the Permanent Collection in Los Angeles.

She is a founding member of the Architecture Lobby, a group advocating for the value of architectural design and labor. Articles by her have appeared in Log, Avery Review, e-Flux, and Harvard Design Magazine amongst other journals. Her theory work explores the relationship between subjectivity, design, and labor in the current economy. Her design work has appeared in HOME, Home and Garden, Progressive Architecture, and the New York Times amongst other journals. Her current work deals with architectural subjectivity, labor, and the current economy. She received the Architectural Record 2018 Women in Architecture Activist Award and the 2021 John Q. Speaker: Sueaee Shin, Senior Sustainability Specialist, Gensler
Presentation Title: Green Space. In Progress.
Abstract: How “healthy” is your space? Sustainability may be a broad term but when it comes to space, there already exist numerous frameworks that could be adopted to assess sustainability in terms of energy & water efficiency, healthy materials, operations & maintenance, indoor air quality, tenant well-being, etc. Let’s take a close look at what’s being used in the current sustainability industry including sustainability analytics, strategy, and green building rating systems such as LEED, WELL, and Fitwel. Prior to joining the lecture, please take a minute to think about what sustainability means to you, how you are practicing sustainability on a daily basis, and any sustainable features you’ve identified in your space.
Speaker Bio: Having worked in the sustainability profession for the past 10 years, Sueaee has seen a drastic change in people’s perception in sustainability, including herself. Sueaee specializes in sustainable ground up construction, commercial interior renovation, building operations & maintenance, and carbon footprint reduction. She leverages ten years of experience in providing sustainability and energy management consulting for portfolio-wide and individual property owners as well as ground-up construction projects. Sueaee is currently with Gensler as a senior sustainability specialist in the Consulting Practice. Prior to joining Gensler in 2021, she had worked at Hunter Roberts Construction and CodeGreen Solutions where she helped clients achieve some of the first LEED for existing buildings and core and shell certifications in New York City.
