While I am excited to be graduating with my BArch this Spring, I am sad to be leaving NJIT. I have loved my time at HCAD. I’ve grown so much as both a person and an architect, and I have learned so many lessons that I will take with me through life. This was all made possible by the faculty members and my classmates who I had the opportunity to work with over the years. I am delighted to continue my education next year as a Masters student at Georgia Tech in the High Performance Building Lab, and I am looking forward to making strides in sustainable design.
Kearny Point Building 197
This proposal converts a last-mile shipping warehouse into a building to house flexible work spaces, dedicated office spaces, laboratories, a maker space, and an event space. The design was inspired by start-up incubators and is designed to foster interaction and collaboration amongst the tenants through informal meeting areas, collaborative spaces, and shared amenities. The form of the building is situated to respond to the surrounding campus and landscape, specifically by lifting to create an entrance courtyard at the main pedestrian axis. Focusing on sustainable design, this project retains the original structure grid and adapts the program inside. The exterior walls were replaced with high-performance wall constructions, and care was taken to lower the embodied energy and carbon, particularly through the choice of insulation. Passive strategies, including exterior shading and light shelves, were introduced to the building to lower the operational energy requirements.
