Built in 1845, this building served from 1869-1873 as the Colored School for Newark under the leadership of James Miller Baxter, Jr., the first Black principal in the Newark school system. At the time of its closing in 2012 it was the oldest school building in continuous use in the city. Recently purchased by the Hanini Group, led by Hillier College graduate Samer Hanini, the building will be renovated to house the renowned Newark Boys Chorus School and will contain an exhibit on the history of the Newark school system.
