Fall 2021 Students
We want to extend to you a most heartfelt welcome as you make your final preparations for the Fall 2021 semester. The information below is to support a seamless start to your semester.
Welcome students,
We have been very busy preparing our campus facilities to provide a spacious and safe place for you to live and learn. Our collective health requires necessary changes in both small personal habits and large day-to-day institutional and commercial operations.
We thrive in community. This is why we are determined to safely open our campus this fall. We do this with full faith in your sense of responsibility for each member of our university community. We know that you will act responsibly to care for yourselves, your families and each other while the COVID-19 variants in this global pandemic continue to test our collective resolve.
We will be following all federal and state mandated safety protocols which currently allow us to hold classes in person at full capacity. All NJIT students, faculty, and staff are required to be vaccinated and to wear masks when in a group setting inside any campus building. We welcome you and wish you a very successful start to the fall semester. Here are some important pieces of information you may find useful.
Studio Move-In:
Studio move-in dates: Please plan on meeting your studio coordinator and instructor on the afternoon of September 2nd. Upper year studios (last two years in major) and Graduate program studios will meet at noon that day and lower level studios will meet at 1:00. Specific locations for the large group meeting will also be posted in Weston Hall and emailed to you prior to that day. You may move in soon after you meet in your actual studio space.
Thursday, Sept 2nd short introductory meetings for coordinated studio cohorts are as follows:
12:00 Noon
Weston I - Architecture Options studios
Weston II - All Graduate Architecture Studios
AIA Room - 3rd year DD Studios
1:00 PM
Weston I - First year Architecture studios
Gallery - Second year Architecture studios
Weston II - 2nd year DD Studios
TBD - 3rd year Architecture
Studio move-in questions: please send an email to hcadadmin@njit.edu
Late Computer Deliveries: We continue to closely monitor the ongoing workstation delivery delays brought on by global shortages of key technical components and supply chain complications. We will keep an eye on this situation and develop an imaging schedule to supply you with the requisite software you will need to match the actual delivery of most workstations. We are modifying our academic curricula and weekly assignment schedule to take these delays into account. If your studio computer arrives after your studio cohort has been imaged, please contact the IST service desk for imaging (https://ist.njit.edu).
Virtual Town Hall Meetings:
Dates TBD
- All 1st and 2nd year Architecture and Art+Design and 3rd year Industrial Design students.
- All Hillier College students are invited to join us for an open forum to ask questions and share experiences once the semester has started.
Hardware Information Check Here
General (ALL STUDENTS)
· Webcam for taking exams
Working Offsite?
· Schedule through IST Service Desk (https://ist.njit.edu) to bring your computer in for imaging (requires two trips to campus)
· Get your own software
Software Use for All Students:
When you are physically in a studio or lab, you have access, without cost, to most of the design software through your imaged workstation. When you leave campus, access to the NJIT network is generally severed. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, it has been possible to maintain access to software through a virtual private network (VPN) connection. We expect this to be the case throughout the fall 2021 semester.
- The first year fall AD 150 course requires the use of Corel Painter and then either CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator, and either Corel Paintshop Pro or Adobe Photoshop. See below for Art + Design specifics.
- All first year Architecture as well as most second year Architecture and Art + Design studio courses require Rhinoceros for modeling as well as either Corel or Adobe software to create composite images and presentations. Autodesk software is used in most studios as well.

Much of the Campus licensed software continues to be available remotely for converged learning as a response to the Pandemic. To access software licensing for the design tools and operating system, please make sure to establish a VPN connection. For those who have not installed the VPN client, please see https://ist.njit.edu/vpn for more information.
For those who have not configured the VPN for Start Before Login, please see the "Cisco AnyConnect VPN - Start Before Logon" instructions.
For students who wish to work without a VPN connection and purchase their own software licenses, please see https://ist.njit.edu/software-available-download for instructions regarding student editions of all design software. Some software, such as Rhino, can be used for free during a trial period but then must be purchased. Students can purchase student versions of Rhino for $130. Corel suites are $15 each for full professional versions. The Adobe Creative Cloud is available for $20/month.
