This stately mansion was the home of John Ballantine, son of Peter Ballantine, founder of Newark-based Ballantine Breweries, one of the oldest and largest breweries in the country. Built in 1884 to designs by architect George Edward Harney, it is the last remaining example of the fine homes that once graced Washington Park. In 1937 it was acquired by the Newark Museum of Art., who restored the edifice in 1976 and opened it up for public viewing. The Museum is a world class institution just down the hill from our campus and admission is free for NJIT students with valid ID. Photo: M. Gosser.
