Wajeeha Mahmood is a Bachelor of Architecture student in the Hillier College of Architecture and Design at NJIT. She is a member of American Institute of Architecture Students and served on the executive board as treasurer during the 2019-2020 academic year.
Trash Park” A Solution for the South Bronx_
The featured project was completed in an options studio under the supervision of instructors Matthew Staudt and Simon David with the assistance of Despo Thoma. Inspired by their practice’s involvement with the “Big -U” project in Manhattan concerning climate change, the instructors, Matthew Staudt and Simon David, brought it to the students attention to reconsider the consequences due to the change in sea level rise. As the Tri-State area is considered one of many susceptible regions in the world designers must rethink both urban and ecological environments in the way we traditionally design architectural features which in turn must be adaptable to the changes. The Mott Haven lowlands in the South Bronx, in a flood zone along the Harlem River, is vulnerable to sea level rise. At the same time, its proximity to Manhattan, threatens low-income communities via gentrification. A poorly maintained neighborhood without an outlet and poorly maintained neighborhood, the design intervention involved creating a sloped park above a waste management facility.
