Architects serve a vital role in the structure of society as they possess the ability to alter the way in which people interact with their surroundings. As a student in pursuit of this field I intend to contribute to redefining the way we live as a society to be more harmonious with the natural world around us. Transforming urban areas into more sustainable and Eco-friendly systems is a personal aspiration. My time at NJIT has taught me much and has given me like-minded friends who value creativity and innovation. Four Freedoms Museum
The Four Freedoms Museum sits at the base of the infamous Louis Khan’s Four Freedoms Memorial on Roosevelt Island. This museum offers an addition to the existing site and provides spaces for individual contemplation of these four freedoms. Louis Khan embodied axiality within his memorial design and the museum’s formal composition respects this. The core of the museum lies on the central axis of the site and offers full transparency between the Renwick smallpox hospital and the FDR memorial through the use of glass curtain walls. The transparent space connects all four galleries and finds itself an extension to Khan’s room and garden design philosophy. Structurally composed of mass timber and CLT, this building acknowledges the unsustainable existing site and offers a more environmentally friendly approach. The museum expresses this method of construction with both exposed structure and wooden exterior louvers. This contrast aims to provide balance between both new and old.
