It is such an honor to finally complete my Bachelor of Architecture degree at NJIT. It may have taken longer than I expected thanks to some non-transferable credits, but I wouldn’t change anything about it. I’ve met so many wonderful people and learned so much over the years and I’m grateful for all those who have helped me along the way. Four Freedoms Foundation
The Four Freedoms Foundation Museum is situated in a small lot between the Four Freedoms State Park monument by Louis Kahn and the abandoned Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island. The intent is for the new museum, dedicated to the four freedoms, to remain connected to the site in an engaging but unobtrusive way. The submerged building with ‘lanterns’ allows for visitors to Roosevelt Island to become enriched with the content of the museum without entering. Visitors entering the below grade structure, whether to the cafe or the museum, are enthralled by dramatic and changing lighting conditions that the lanterns provide through the day and as they become a source of light at night. The engagement of the museum with the public is vital for Roosevelt Island as its tumultuous and of unknown past becomes a beacon of hope for all Americans and their values of freedom in the future.
