Hi everyone my name is Katrina Mall and I just completed the B.Arch program here at the Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD). I am very grateful for all the opportunities I have had during my time at NJIT. Whether it was meeting amazing people like my Alpha Rho Chi family, having amazing experiences abroad in Siena, and meeting so many amazing professors that have changed my life. The professors here have not only helped me grow through my architecture career but also as an individual which is something not many people get to experience. Thank you HCAD for all the amazing things and people you have brought into my life and I can not wait to see where it takes me next!
Four Freedoms Foundation
The Four Freedoms Foundation Project is located on Roosevelt Island, New York City. This Project takes the place of the current design by Louis Kahn. Kahn’s design made perfect use of the triangular shape of the park’s site, by emphasizing it as a parti to draw focus to the monument itself. This project pays tribute to both aspects of the island. By creating an open, grid-like structure, this project takes notice of not only the Four Freedoms Park and monument but also Renwick’s SmallPox Hospital. This project is a buffer zone for two worlds in architecture and design; the masonry world and the environmental world. Throughout the project, the programs are plugged into this grid system and encased with multiple types of landscaped spaces. From Rooftop Gardens, Hydroponic planting systems, and existing trees from Kahn’s design, this project embodies a connection of worlds that needs to be considered in our new age of architecture.
