Urban design is my true passion; living and studying in Newark I have gained a unique perspective on the impact that great design has on a community. The Masters of Infrastructure Planning and BARCH program at NJIT have given me the tools to tackle design at multiple scales; from building details to neighborhood urban frameworks. A highlight of the MIP program was our Hydrohoods of To-morrow proposal for the 2019 Schindler Competition, a framework for a sustainable and equitable waterfront. The team placed 4th worldwide, awarding us a travel grant to visit Mumbai, India. I will never forget the importance of our site research and stakeholder exercises as tools for design. The Infrastructure Planning program built my knowledge of architecture, enabling me to become a more holistic designer at a larger scale. I will continue this momentum post-graduation by designing public places that are equitable for everyone.
Hydrohoods of To-morrow
Achieved in collaboration with the entire MIP Studio, Hydrohoods of To-morrow proposes a hydrohood—a new net-zero neighborhood unit that will equitably and sustainably shape the future of Mumbai’s Eastern Waterfront. The concept reverses the trend of Mumbai’s unsustainable and ever-expanding water supply system, and in doing so, leapfrogs a traditional, top-down distribution network to create a waterfront framework organized around smart and equitable water management. Our waterfront framework is anchored by five hydrohoods, each with its own mix of housing, workplaces, and public spaces that takes inspiration from the existing uses and practices currently found on site. While each hydrohood has its own character, all hydrohoods collect, retain, clean, and reuse water through blue-green infrastructure. Our net-zero waterfront learns from existing practices of resource modesty and proposes a new model that adds to the Mumbai housing stock, increases accessibility regionally and locally, improves environmental conditions, increases public open space, and creates educational and job opportunities for upward mobility.
