Christian Villanueva
My name is Christian (Ian) Villanueva, and I am proud to say that I have finally finished my education here at Hillier College. I started my first year in 2012, and I came into this program with a head full of ideas and notions of the path ahead of me. With the help of my professors and the knowledge they have shared with me, I can definitely say that I am a better person, critical thinker and designer. I was part of AIAS and helped fellow colleagues and friends on their paths to success. My path was a bit rocky; but coming back to NJIT and finishing up my degree, I have no regrets. I thank the faculty and staff at HCAD and NJIT and my family and friends for helping me find my way. I look forward to seeing you all out there, as working professionals, as activists, as designers and as architects.
Scale and Movement
This studio project emphasized movement. We were tasked with using a restricted volume of a 6’x6’ cube to map a specific action. We then had to visually capture a specific movement inside this volume. Starting with capturing my actions in photos, and digitizing them to Rhino, I proceeded to create a digital model that I used to create contour lines to shape the interior of my cube. From here, I had to find a way to replicate the curved contours of the cube’s interior into a physical model made of plaster. Using plaster was a fun challenge! The reason I am proud of this project was because this early exercise helped me to realize that architecture can be miniscule in scale and that as architects, we have a responsibility to not just look at the bigger picture but also the smaller moments within them.
