Catalina Valdes Burbano
Hello! My name is Catalina Valdes, I received my associate’s degree in Fine Arts in 2015 and I transferred to NJIT in 2016 from RPI. Transfering to NJIT has been an amazing experience for me and the place where I found myself surrounded with extraordinary colleagues and professors. Hillier College has given me the skills, knowledge and tools to strengthen my career path as an architect and I am very proud to have completed my degree at NJIT.
Four Freedoms Gallería
This is one of the most interesting studios I’ve taken and it is located in a very interesting site. Roosevelt Island is distinguished by the different architectural ‘built’ worlds throughout its location. The proposed Gallería takes its place between the James Renwick Smallpox hospital ruins and the FDR Memorial by Louis Kahn. These two architectural worlds create a threshold for the Four Freedoms Gallería to exist. The project is to be a museum that provides additional functions such as a piazza, cafe, and a library, nonetheless it is still meant to be the threshold that gives the user a transition from the hospital ruins to the monumental world of the FDR Memorial. The main focus of the project is reflected in the garden realm that Louis Kahn envisioned in FDR memorial and extends over the south side of the project to become an extension of the idea of a Room and a Garden coexisting together.
