Bridget Fitzpatrick
NJIT has introduced me to some of the most inspirational and creative individuals, both faculty and students in architecture and other design-related fields. These individuals have inspired me to experiment with the abstract and organic side of design through art and writing. My architecture work considers the social and environmental implications on various typologies, with designs ranging in locations across the tri-state area including parks, piers, and urban developments. A professor of mine stated freshman year that, “No matter what your career path holds for you in the future, architecture or not, this program will forever change the way you see the world”. And, it has. I am grateful to have had this opportunity to channel the nonconventional side of design and analyze the value of human interaction with ecology. Systems of the Senses
The project is located on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island and aims to modernize the concept design of the adjacent Louis Kahn Four Freedoms Park: stripping architecture down to, “A Room and a Personal Garden”. The building manipulates a room condition through a structural grid to emulate the sensorial experience of a garden into a built form. The structural members of the building angle to create visual variation within the building and views from the exterior, while the envelope and surrounding site boundary chamfers to guide individuals through and around the building. Various air-controlled conditions are deployed throughout the building, including interior, exterior, and in-between spaces to further evoke the senses experienced in a personal garden. The materiality of the building includes transparent glass, back-painted opaque glass, and steel structural members that remain visible from the interior and pierce through the building envelope in the in-between spaces.
