My name is Amena and I'm a recent graduate with a BA in Interior Design. Choosing interior design as my major was a very spontaneous decision, but nevertheless proved to be very rewarding. Culinary Institute of Newark
Culinary Institute of Newark is a culinary arts school as well as a community center for the Newark community. The program and architecture of this project explores mass, carved planar surfaces articulated with airiness and laciness. The existing condition of the site was an old synagogue and a new addition parallel to it. The culinary arts school has a vertical hydroponics garden within the center of the building to allow airiness and unity with the old and new building. Architecturally the garden unites the two buildings and serves as a background for the demo kitchen in the amphitheater and is viewed from the restaurant in the new building. The garden provides fresh produce for the school, restaurant, and community market. This project is driven with the ambition to dissect how mass, planes, and volumes can be articulated and united within a site.
