Obscured from view, abandoned Old Essex County Jail is a vital part of Newark history, with ties to the Morris Canal, Newark Riots and the architecturally innovative work of John Haviland. The premise of this project is that the jail and its history would be preserved in a way that will allow it to be open to the public and become integrated with the expanding NJIT campus on an adjacent surface parking lot and serve as graduate housing for the expanding student body.
