My years at NJIT have been quite the journey, from late nights to early mornings to 3-hour lectures in the coldest lecture halls. Being part of the HCAD community has been an amazing experience, it gave me the opportunity to meet people that I can call my friends. I’ll miss walking up the ramp leading to Weston and stopping by the shop for a croissant before heading to studio. My journey would not have been completed without the endless support I received from my family, especially during these challenging times of the pandemic. They have been, and always will be, my biggest motivators and my biggest fans. Who would have thought we’d be finishing our last year and a half at NJIT online? Congratulations to us for surviving 5 years of architecture school!
Brick Laying End-Effector
The goal of this studio project was to develop a functional end-effector for the robotic arm ABB 4600 capable of laying bricks of different colors in uniquely designed forms without the use of mortar. The end-effector also utilized a mechanical system that allowed for the robotic arm to recognize bricks of different colors with the help of an RGB color sensor attachment and placed them accordingly. The construction of a building with bricks is a task that many workers find very labor demanding and tiresome, the most tedious part of the process is carrying these bricks. There are already examples of technology being used to help the bricklaying industry, what can we do as designers to help take it a step further? We proposed a technique that allowed for the robotic arm to lay bricks of different colors in unique designs.
