The Purple Line light rail project in Maryland will extend 16 miles from Bethesda to New Carrollton, taking an estimated 17,000 cars of the road every day. Mott MacDonald provided detailed design for the Bethesda light rail station as well as the below-grade station entrance to the WMATA Red Line, including a shaft 60 feet in diameter and 100 feet deep, and a two-level cavern that connects with the existing station mezzanine.
