Associate Professor Anthony (Tony) Schuman has been named Interim Dean of the College of Architecture and Design effective January 1, 2017. A long-time professor at the College, Schuman previously served as both Graduate and Undergraduate Program Director in the School of Architecture. He is a past-President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and was named a Distinguished Professor by that organization.
Schuman’s scholarship, all focused on architecture’s social dimension, has evolved from an early focus on French social housing to community engagement in schools of architecture. His essay on that topic appears in ACSA’s 100th anniversary book, Architecture School: Three Centuries of Educating Architects in North America. Schuman was a founding member of several activist organizations in the architecture and planning professions, including Urban Deadline, The Architects' Resistance (TAR), Homefront, and Planners Network. Long active in community development efforts in Newark, Schuman is a trustee of the Newark Preservation and Landmarks Committee (NPLC) and Lincoln Park/Coast Cultural District, Inc., a community development corporation. He is co-editor of Newark Landmark Treasures: A Guide to the Landmark Buildings, Parks, Public Art & Historic Districts in New Jersey’s Metropolis, published in 2016.
