Gallery Events

The Gallery, located in Weston Hall in the heart of the College of Architecture and Design, hosts two exhibits each year curated by Matt Gosser. Each exhibit is introduced with an opening reception which presents live entertainment, usually local college bands. Some of the gallery shows are accompanied by panel discussions or a film screening. The College also participates in the Newark Open Studio Tour which features an array of galleries and artist studios in Newark’s burgeoning art scene.

Every Fall for the past several years, the Gallery has hosted an exhibition that focuses the public's attention on an aspect of Newark's vanishing architecture. These include exhibits relating to the Pabst Brewery, the old Essex County Jail, downtown central Newark, the recently demolished Westinghouse Factory building and the old downtown theaters. Each exhibition features roughly 40 established and emerging artists, mostly from the greater Newark area. “Richard Meier – Newark Architect and Artist”  was on on view in Fall 2016. Every Spring we host a solo show for emerging artists, again, mostly from the greater Newark area. Artists are chosen for this show based on how their work relates to architecture and design. One show featured an artist who sketched, painted and made ceramic models of extant buildings throughout Newark. Another showcased an artist who was a furniture and lighting designer. In addition to art exhibitions, student and alumni work is regularly featured in the Gallery during special events such as the annual Design Showcase, and faculty engage in exhibitions of their own design work.

In Fall 2018, we are honored to present the exhibition "Light" showing works of artists and designers from around the world brought together by their profound appreciation for light, both natural and artificial, in their products and design processes. “Light” will open to the public on Thursday, October 4 with a reception from 6-9 p.m for the artists/designers, live entertainment, food and drinks.  The exhibition will close on Monday, November 19, 2018 with an artist talk starting at 6 p.m.   CoAD Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is located on the second floor of Weston Hall, NJIT campus (on the corner of MLK Blvd. and Warren St., Newark).
