Barbara and Leonard Littman Architecture and Design Library

The Barbara and Leonard Littman Architecture and Design Library, the only branch library within the NJIT central system, is conveniently located in Weston Hall in the heart of the Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD). 

Resources

Actively used by students and faculty members alike, the Littman Library is not only a repository of knowledge, but also a center for the generation and dissemination of information at HCAD. In addition to Director Maya Gervits, the Library is staffed with a library specialist, a library assistant, and student-employees. It is open to public 7 days per week, during the fall and spring semesters.

The Library provides assistance for all levels of research needs. The librarians also work closely with students on their projects and faculty to design specific course-integrated instruction to foster information literacy skills among undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to research consultation and instruction, students can access online video tutorials and research guides covering a variety of subjects in art, design and architecture via the library website.

The library collections, which include traditional print as well as online resources, serve not only the NJIT community, but also architects, designers and scholars across the New Jersey and New York area. The holdings cover the entire timeline of the history of art, design and architecture, from ancient civilizations to the present, with a major emphasis on the 20th and 21st centuries. The Littman Library also collects materials on visual arts, industrial, digital and interior design, landscape architecture, urban design, infrastructure design, transportation, historic preservation, photography, and environmental psychology.

Graphic materials include more than 1,200 maps and architectural drawings, mostly related to New York and New Jersey. This collection is incorporated in the library's Digital Archive of Newark Architecture (DANA), an initiative undertaken by the Littman Library to support the HCAD architectural curriculum, to improve public access to a variety of historic materials, and to document through a digital archive past and present projects in Newark. The Library also maintains substantial collections of slides and digital images as well as video recordings.
